Sound, reflection and stillness : designing with water

A garden is a feast for the senses, but it is often the sound of water that truly transforms a space from a beautiful landscape into a private sanctuary. At Cambridgeshire Garden Design, we consider water to be one of our most powerful design tools, bringing movement, light, and acoustic atmosphere to our projects.

The type of water feature we choose dictates the mood of the garden. A still, dark reflection pool acts as a mirror to the sky, capturing the movement of clouds and the silhouette of overhanging trees. It brings a profound sense of calm and makes a space feel larger. Conversely, a sheer water blade or a bubbling rill introduces a continuous, soothing sound that helps mask background noise from nearby roads or neighbours.

Scale is also crucial. You do not need a sprawling lake to make an impact. A bespoke Corten steel water bowl or a simple stone trough nestled among soft planting can provide just as much sensory pleasure as a large architectural pool. We love to integrate water directly into the hard landscaping—such as a rill cutting cleanly through a limestone terrace—creating a seamless transition between the built environment and the natural elements.

Water also invites wildlife. From the flash of a dragonfly to birds coming to bathe, a well-designed water feature breathes life into the garden. It is the finishing touch that makes an outdoor space feel complete.
